ArcKnow at NCAD: ArcGIS 9.2
Manage our World! ArcGIS 9 is revolutionary, complete software facilitating scalable GIS development and use. Learning ArcGIS ArcView is also learning ArcEditor and ArcInfo, as these latter products represent cumulative extensions of the robust base of capability provided in ArcView 9. All ArcGIS products comprise the same primary application suite: ArcCatalog, ArcMap, and ArcToolBox. ArcGIS provides the GeoDataBase for advanced GIS data storage and analysis. The ArcView "personal" geodatabase is based on Microsoft Access, while the enterprise geodatabase, editable in ArcEditor and ArcInfo, is based on Microsoft SQL Server and/or other relational database management systems. With ver 9.2, the more capable "file" geodatabase is included in ArcView along with the "personal" gdb. ArcGIS methods include:
- building geodatabase with topology
- direct iNternet integration
- managing widely various data holdings and metadata
- managing disparate coordinate systems (StatePlanes, geographic, GPS, etc.)
- georeferencing image and vector (integrating orthophotos and project CAD to GIS)
- using network topology (roads, utilities, etc.)
- conditional behavior (cascading events, symbolization, annotation)
- enterprise-wide symbology standards
- feature-linked annotation and refined control of text on the map
- geoprocessing framework, including the geoModeler
- and more!
ArcKnow I - Schedule
This 2-day class presumes no prior experience with GIS software. The concepts of GIS, database management, spatial data, and data query are carefully covered while exercising the variety of data formats available to and authored in ArcGIS. Students will learn to manage GIS building blocks and concepts including map documents, geodatabase, topology, layers, projection, symbolization, annotation, geocoding, spatial analysis, rendering and map layout. A graduate of this class is prepared for the sequence class ArcKnow II.
Your Instructor, john schmidt, M.S., has been teaching ESRI technology since 1991, building on expertise with AutoCAD since 1987. Base knowledge: Religion, Medicine, Construction, Computer Engineering, and Knowledge Engineering. John authored: http://www.esri.com/news/arcnews/fall01articles/visualizingearth.html, based on the 1997 document http://ncad.net/GI/dim3d.htm. In 1999, he presented the increasingly pertinent Surveyor's GIS at the Conference of Ohio Professional Land Surveyors, applicable to everyone's GIS!
The price for ArcGIS I is $500. Graduates receive the NCAD Certificate of Learning.
We are honored by your interest and look forward to the joy of learning with you! Thank you for your enquiry. We will respond with a no-obligation Registration Form for your consideration.

John took the time to research any questions that went beyond the prepared materials. He has a true grasp of what it takes to be a teacher. Examples done on the fly to address side questions were done efficiently and correctly, showing a great amount of skill with the software. I will strongly recommend others to utilize John as an instructor.
